Giant Florida Channel Bass or Redfish
Commonly called a channel bass or redfish
in the Mosquito Lagoon in Central Florida
these large fish are often caught in less than a foot of
water. Steve Bryant from Tennesee (above) put in a
few hours of fishing before stepping on the cruise ship
'Sovergn of the Sea', Carnival Cruise Line's largest vessel
referred to as 'Carnival Glory'.
"I told my family, if I'm going to Florida on a cruise,
I'm going fishing", Explained Steve. "This fish
almost came out of the water to take a live bait, then pullled
me for seventy (70) minutes before Captain Richard netted
and released him."
Steves fish was just over 50 inches long and weighed over
40 pounds. September and October produce large redfish we
refer to as "Bulls". Depending on where you are
from these fish are often named redfish, channel bass, red
drum or puppy drum. They are magnificent
animals and are released back to the lagoon when they are
as big as the one above.
The Florida regulations as of the beginning of 2005 was
one fish per person between 18 and 27 inches. To read more
