Catching Sand Fleas
Oh the joys of children and the beach! Betcha never knew
of that under your very toes while wading in ankle deep water,
there was such diverse ocean life. Grunions, bivalves, mollusk,
various crustaceans & crabs including the popular fishing
bait known as sand fleas. I hoped to know the scientific name
so that I could share my vast marine biology background with
you but growing up and around brevard county beaches my father
just called them sand fleas and since... well the name just
stuck.
Whether your a kid or adult these little critters are delightful
to catch and look at (they look similar to little punch-buggies
with legs). Just look at the waters edge and you'll see them
burrowing around and feeding. It seems that August is the
time when they spawn and are plentiful. Pompano take this
time very seriously to feed and travel our coastline while
they feed on a smorgasbord of fat egg laden sand fleas.
Check out Savannah & Mekenzie in the Florida Keys. There
is a short video of them catching loads of fish and having
sooo... much fun. [click]
